  • Its cycle: PWC surveys and clears its lines every 3 to 5 years, service drops included.
  • Its widths: a corridor of at least 50 feet for sub-transmission lines, 30 feet for two and three phase primary lines, and 10 feet around street lights. It does not trim for area lights.
  • Service drops: only limbs pressing on or rubbing the wire, 1 to 2 feet of clearance, nothing over 4 inches in diameter, and no tree removal.
  • Everything else: PWC's page says problems outside its guidelines are for the customer to hire a private contractor.
  • To ask for trimming: PWC Customer Service, (910) 483-1382.

Planting the next tree

PWC groups trees by mature height: tall (60 feet and up), medium (up to 40 feet) and low (up to 20 feet), and warns that a tall tree planted under a line will be pruned by the utility. It recommends planting while the tree is dormant, in fall after leaf drop or early spring before bud-break, in a hole up to three times the root ball's width but no deeper than the ball.
